Rhode Island's OZ 2.0 map is final. 25 tracts are designated, effective January 1, 2027, replacing the 25 current zones, which remain in effect through December 31, 2028.
This map opens on the official 2027 designated Rhode Island Opportunity Zones (deep blue), effective January 1, 2027, from the list Treasury published November 5, 2026. Use the Layers panel to see the original 2018 zones (gold, in effect through December 31, 2028), both maps together, or the non-final eligible pool. On the 2027 view, the rural toggle shows only tracts marked Rural on the official list. See every designated Rhode Island tract on the 2027 list.
Rhode Island has 25 designated Qualified Opportunity Zones across its 5 counties, concentrated primarily in Providence and in Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Woonsocket. As the smallest state by land area in the nation, Rhode Island's OZ footprint is compact but strategically significant, its zones cover some of the densest post-industrial urban neighborhoods in New England.
Providence's OZs offer urban redevelopment opportunities anchored by Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the city's growing innovation economy. Pawtucket and Central Falls, among the most densely populated and economically distressed communities in New England, present compelling workforce housing and mixed-use redevelopment opportunities, with significant transit connectivity via the MBTA's planned South Coast Rail extension. Rhode Island's low cost basis relative to Boston and proximity to Providence's improving urban core make it an underexplored OZ market.
All OZ 1.0 designations remain in effect through December 31, 2028. Rhode Island's compact geography, strong university ecosystem, and improving business climate create a focused opportunity set for investors comfortable with the state's legacy of urban economic challenges.
